The wildlife

The wildlife in Strathnairn is rich and varied and this is partly because of the wide range of habitats. The River Nairn supports grey wagtails and dippers and otters are regularly seen along its banks. The moorland has red grouse, mountain hare and red deer whilst the lochs have nesting Slavonian grebes and feeding ospreys.

The woodland varies from the remnants of old Caledonian pine forest to the stands of almost pure birch. There are extensive conifer plantations many of which have now reached the age that they support crops of cones. Cone seed on such non native trees are sought out by the specialist feeders such as red squirrel and birds such as the crossbill, lesser redpoll and siskin.

Pheasants and partridges are common in the garden.

About the Cabin

The owners of the cabin visited this area for the first time in 2012 and were immediately impressed by the combination of beautiful highland scenery and the relative closeness to Inverness. Building work started on the main house in 2013, with the cabin being completed by the end of 2015. Since opening the following month the cabin has proved to be very popular.

Near yet “Farr”

At 275m above sea level and surrounded by nature the community of Farr has the feel of a much more isolated location but is in fact within very easy reach of the city of Inverness. This is not a common combination in the highlands of Scotland with most of the popular destinations being far more isolated.

Amazing location to explore

With several community owned woodlands, lochs and mountains, Strathnairn is blessed with an abundance of places to visit.

Guest Reviews

This cabin has everything you could need and more with modern clean facilities and the best bed you have ever slept in! The views are gorgeous. An hours drive from Aviemore which I highly recommend you go and visit the ski slopes. It's a home away from home and Scott (who built it himself) is a very friendly host who lives in his own wooden house further down the drive so he's never too far away if you have any questions. Will definitely be going back and already told all our friends and family to book!
OliviaAbsolutely perfect!
A beautiful new cabin with tons of space, wonderful decorations, all the amenities you could hope for (including washing machine; full kitchen; fast wifi, etc.), right outside a very very quiet little Scottish town. Great location for visiting Loch Ness (and a fantastic restaurant by Loch Ness) and Inverness - a short drive away but feels very removed from city life. Warm welcome by owner, with coffee and scones, and yet left alone for the 3 days we stayed there to come and go as if our own house. Great value - can't say enough good things about it. Husband and I wished we could cart if back to U.S. as vacation house!
SandM54Better than home!
The cabin was even better than we expected from the description!! The footprint may be small, but it is roomy and full of light. Everything was beautiful--decor and views--and convenience itself! The cabin is situated in a quiet little community, close to Inverness and Loch Ness, but without all the hubbub of tourists. There are even community woodlands across the street for a peaceful stroll. Our host Scott was absolutely wonderful and recommended a fantastic spot for dinner with a beautiful drive and views of the Loch. I cannot recommend staying here highly enough!!
